In 1900 the school was saved from insolvency by Dr. William Stone Woods, and together with his wife, saved the school and was honored by having it named after them. In 1914 it officially became a college and began by training teachers, later expanding to liberal arts with a renowned equestrian program. The school changed it’s name to William Woods University in 1992 with the addition of graduate level classes, and went co-ed in 1997. Robertson and the local Presbyterians in 1851 as Fulton College and assumed the present name in 1853. In 1909, old Westminster Hall was destroyed by fire, and only the Columns remain, which today mark a rite of passage for new and graduating students. In 1969, Westminster College dedicated one of its most recognizable landmarks, the Church of St. Mary, the Virgin Aldermanbury, moved from London and rebuilt on the campus. Named after the first family of the house, the full history is unknown.  Some sources believe the current home is re-built from a previous home, with the kitchen being the only remaining portion of the original house. It’s possible the home was re-built by J.H. Tureman in 1889 for his daughter and husband, E.H. Marquess, who was a professor at Westminster College. Born in Tennessee in 1842, E.H. Marquess was educated in Virginia, served in the Confederate Army, and began teaching Latin in Mississippi before coming to Fulton and teaching at Westminster for 35 years. A residence hall at Westminster is also named after him. Many families called this house home prior to it becoming a Bed and Breakfast by the Logan’s in the early 1990’s.

He married Maria Dreps and the couple had two daughters, Katheryn and Beulah. He specialized in institutional buildings and his designs can be admired at the University of Missouri’s Quadrangle. In Fulton his designs include the State Hospital and The Palace Hotel. He founded the first telephone in town in 1882. In his later years, Bell continued to design small-scale projects such as private residences, libraries, banks, and schools. When he died in 1929, he was working on plans for William Woods College.
